Assimilation

Artists Statement

Assimilation is a testament of society’s reaction to the uncertainty of our future. Our creative process was centered around obscuring any resemblance of individuality. there is an overarching sense of darkness, a display of our symbolic relationship with our growing dystopian future. Our narrative unfolds through three stages, symbolizing the process of conformity. By experimenting with a moody color palette, handmade chainmail pieces, and varying silhouettes, we invite discourse to address the future of fashion.

Who?

The enforcer of assimilation is the general ruling government, extending beyond what is occurring in the United States. Marginalized groups, such as minorities, could be the ones facing pressure to assimilate.

Where?

This extends globally, especially because technology can spread information rapidly. Assimilation takes place in various setting, including schools where curricula are designers to promote the dominant ideology, workplace where various is suppressed, and public spaces where surveillance is everywhere.

What?

Assimilation is the process where individuals of differing backgrounds are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society. The process of assimilating involves taking on the traits of the dominant culture to such a degree that the assimilating group becomes socially indistinguishable from other member of the society.

Why?

Governments promote assimilation by implementing/enforcing policies to maintain control over the general population, ensuring obedience and quashing dissent. This way the elite stay in power, and citizens must abide by the laws… which obstruct necessary change.

When?

It intensifies during times of political unrest and social upheaval. Continuous surveillance and propaganda campaigns create a pervasive atmosphere to assimilate at all times. A shift in our political climate came on 2016. Our attitudes towards the future started to shift due to an abnormal temperatures increases, political divide, and most notably, a global lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is assimilation?

Assimilation is a dystopian society the opertates across various channels, from cultural and linguistic suppression to political coercion and social control, all serving the interests of those in power at the expense of individual freedom and diversity. Assimilation can be driven by various factors, including power dynamics, economic interests, or attempts to maintain social order. The loss of identity amongst the general population is what feeds the progression of this integration. The merging of traits can occur physically as well as psychologically and mentally.
